Germanist Quote of the Week #1

"The irresponsible, and more than despotic authority vested by the Roman laws in the father over the son, was thoroughly repugnant to the Visigothic conception of justice and freedom, which had been transmitted through many generations of barbarian ancestors."
From S.P. Scott's* notes to his translation of the Visigothic Forum Iudicum.  Hurrah for S.P.!  I expect this sort of thing is still taught at Strand Community College.

* His real name as I am sure his heirs and assigns are unlikely to sue...

  1. You can say what you like about people who have passed. This is for two reasons: 1) you can't libel the dead under English law; and 2) the Data Protection Act only extends its protections to the living. The Mormons must thank their lucky stars for the latter or their huge databases of ancestors would be in all sorts of trouble.

A dash of feee legal advice from Mark H.

  2. If things go on the way they looked like going at one poin, I might need a lawyer... You're hired!
