The Malaise of US University Education: Anthony Grafton Writes

Here is a very good piece by Anthony Grafton, which ought to ring a number of alarm bells for all of us toiling on this side of the pond and watching the things which Grafton thinks safeguard the advantages of our system being placed under threat.

Sadly, the line-break after "At every level of the system, dedicated professors are setting students on fire with enthusiasm" creates an unfortunate image...  The line-break above makes it even worse...

  1. And let us not forget Grafton's wholly justified comments about UK universities http://www.nybooks.com/blogs/nyrblog/2010/mar/09/britain-the-disgrace-of-the-universities/
which earned him the accolade from Professor Sir Rick Trainor 'colourful language from overseas scholars who are seemingly unaware of the financial pressures that all British universities are experiencing.' In fact Grafton knows more about what is wrong with the University of London, than Trainor, as any observer of Trainor's King's History Department well knows.
